Blog #5 – Thanksgiving in a Foreign Country

I’ve only read about how people used to harvest vegetables and grains for Thanksgiving. Now, I actually get to do it!

Since our land here is an active farm, we get fresh beans, melons, gourds, chilies, tomatoes, onions, carrots, eggplants, coconuts, mangoes, bananas, black pepper, jackfruit, ginger, garlic, sweet potatoes, green onions, and pumpkins of ten different varieties! What I love about living here, is as soon as I wake up, my grandma kicks me out of my bed with a huge basket and makes me climb to the top of our outhouse, where she’s converted the terrace into a greenhouse. Today, I went and grabbed a bunch of chilies, a huge melon, some gourds, and a rare vegetable that, if you translate it, is called nose ring veggie. It kind of looks like the tip of a nose ring, and is very sweet if you cook it right. If not, it’s really bitter. Here’s a pic of today’s harvest and the greenhouse.

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!
