Blog #6 – The Neighbors

There aren’t very many gated communities here in India. Actually, there’s maybe one gated community in the entire city. So Kallayam is pretty bare, for most of the day. However, we have two families living across the street, and they are some of the nicest people you’ll meet. There’s Shalini, who helps us out with everything from vegetable harvests to sweeping the front of the house. There is her daughter Minnu, who is four years old, comes over with a pot of whatever they’re eating that morning. They have chickens, goats, and ducks that just kind of roam around during the day. It’s funny because whenever the chicks get on our land, they like to eat the flowers, and you can see my old grandma chasing them away with a stick every single day.
