A Parent’s Role in a Student’s Life When Attending School Online for Free

As parents, sometimes we can forget that our teenager has only been on this earth for less than two decades! Teenagers continuously experience new lessons and feelings. To connect better with your student, step back and examine situations through his or her eyes. At Hope High School Online, we partner with parents to help students flourish in their studies at our free online school in Arizona. We encourage you to dive deeper into understanding your child as a student, friend, and soon-to-be adult.

It’s Hard to Step Back and Let Your Child Take Ownership

As parents, what can we do to support our teenagers on their journey to be successful students and adults? Try these tips when needing to take a step back, listen, and connect to who your teenager is as a young adult:

“Supposed to.”

Your teen may not look or be exactly who you imagined. But that’s ok! It’s even better actually. Not one size fits all, and none of us are perfect we’ve all had to take this same journey.  When your teenager starts to pave their own way, encourage them as they make choices, helping them to understand how to make the right choices so they can continue to grow and change for the better.

Force

Parents have the tough responsibility of setting suitable boundaries. In some instances, it’s really about your student’s safety and well-being.  Stand firm in these circumstances. However, if your teen resists minor guidelines like hairstyle or clothing style, why force it? They are becoming their unique self. Think of yourself as your teenager’s guide they can trust, who has their best interests at heart, not the authoritarian that has to have everything their way.

One-sided Decisions

As a parent, you will always have the final say. But that final say comes with a lot of responsibility. Is it the best for my child? Is it what she/he wants? Both you and your teen will grow together with healthy communication when discussing things between both of you.

Negative Messages

Teenagers absorb many negative messages throughout their days, not only from others but mostly themselves. As a parent, be a positive force in your child’s life, because there is already so much negativity around them.  Help them tell themselves the truth about how loved and how unique they are, and that there is a path ahead that they will flourish in because of their unique gifts and talents.  Help them discover and value their unique set of gifts and strengths – whether it is in their creativity, humor, compassionate personality, or analytical mind – find their gifts and celebrate with them!

Your Own Childhood Story

Parents work tirelessly to give their children a better life. Sometimes as parents, our own childhood and past fears can creep in and change our perspective on how we interact with our teenagers.  Tell yourself the truth about yourself as well, and don’t be derailed by fear or anxiety for your child. Stay true to the positive future goals you and your teen are working towards.
